Celebrating my birthday milestone on my actual birthdate at King Restaurant this year took on additional family memories since I was able to celebrate as a family group of eight. My husband and I arranged a fairly lavish 9-course Chinese dinner since family from far and near were coming to celebrate our August birth month. We tried to coordinate the banquet menu according to Chinese food symbolism traditions to represent happiness, longevity, prosperity, abundance, harmony and family unity. The chef/owner was very accomodating as he offered his expertise in our menu planning, portion sizes and a private room for our family. Also, we took into consideration our guests' Westernized Chinese palates and possible food allergies. FOOD: -Shrimp Balls & Salt and Pepper Deep-fried Squid -Crab and Fish Maw Soup -Chinese-style Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Cabbage -Steamed Sea Bass -Chicken & Abalone Casserole -Pumpkin, Chinese Yam and Wood Ear Mushroom (fungus) -Beef Tenderloin in Black Pepper Sauce -Pan-fried Noodles with Shredded Pork -Dried Scallop & Egg White Fried Rice -Sweet Red Bean (adzuki) Soup We requested to have each dish "staged" rather than brought in all at once, but we understood that the food would come out according to the preparation time and kitchen workflow. The service was friendly. They did their best to keep our group hydrated with chilled water, hot tea, and the wines and soft drinks we brought along. King Restaurant & Bar is one of our favorite Chinese restaurants to eat at on a weekly basis or to entertain at.

A group of us had dinner here recently. We started with the chicken and corn soup which the waitress served and is similar to an egg drop soup. Then the rest of the food came rolling out; honey walnut shrimp, kung pao chicken, lobster with-mein, beef broccoli, chicken with black bean and Peking duck. The service was great and the food even better. Some of us had been here before so we knew beforehand but for those who hadn't, they were surprised. By 7pm the restaurant was packed. The restaurant has a full bar, two karaoke rooms and a private room. I'm pretty sure you need to reserve the karaoke rooms in advance. There's also live tanks for the lobster and Dungeness crab so you know it's fresh. Self parking is available behind of the restaurant in a shared lot.

Still enjoy this eatery because they continued to serve great taste dishes and servers were all great. Do watch out for the pot holes on their entrance to the parking lot from Kapiolani Blvd. No doubt, they are damaging to one's car, esp those with low clearance; hope they get that fixed quickly. Other worthy note. Their advertisement in the Chinese newspaper is misleading. They no longer offering most of those dishes advertised.

Visited again this year while we are in the vicinity of Ala Moana Mall. Food is still quite tasty... not swimming in cornstarch sauce...not everything is battered/deep fried. This time we tried their Ginger /onion small lobster($27) - my hubby likes it! Abalone chicken in clay pot-- Cubed chicken thigh meat is pan fried till dry with the flavour of the garlic bulbs happily married together. Some chefs skill+patience. Don't think I can replicate this at home. Salted fish eggplant in clay pot-- okay still, yet they skimped on the salted fish this time. S/S pork-- lightly battered pork bites with the sauce wrapped around the pork, not drenched/swimming in it. Meat too lean should be a little more fattier... Usually we do not like the Americanized Chinese food but we do enjoy some dishes here at Kings!
